We Loved Our Stay at Big Sandy Lodge!

We had a great stay at Big Sandy Lodge! Three of us stayed the night before leaving on a week-long hike and it was perfect. The staff was warm and welcoming, the cabins were charming, the bath house perfect, and there was a warm camaraderie between the workers and other guests. A pack horse and Alicia took our packs to May's Lake and this was a great service which allowed us to do a few day hikes from there and lighten the load of food in our bear cans. Jace also was helpful in giving us trail conditions and advice on where to camp. He let us keep our car at the lodge for the week which was probably safer than at the trailhead. It was a great visit and we look forward to returning!

Fabulous off the grid location run by a very caring family. Amazing setting right at the trailhead. Cabins were very comfortable and food was filling & delicious. Had their horses to drop our backpacks well into the backcountry. We have stayed in many âÂÂrusticâ cabins in Wyoming and Colorado and this is our favorite.

Fabulous off the grid location run by a very caring family. Amazing setting right at the trailhead. Cabins were very comfortable and food was filling & delicious. Had their horses to drop our backpacks well into the backcountry. We have stayed in many ârusticâ cabins in Wyoming and Colorado and this is our favorite.

We had reservations for 2 nights starting Aug 12, 2026. We drove up late in the afternoon to find a 'Closed' sign on the Lodge and no other paying guests staying there. A staff person met us outside the Lodge and directed us to our cabin and the washroom and said dinner would be signaled by a bell around 6:30pm. The cabin was very rustic and there were gaps around the door and in the walls that worried us about rodent problems with our food. When I went to the washroom building there were used towels and personal items in the shower area. Strange for a place with no other guests. When I went to use the toilet I found it full of excrement that appeared to be several days old. When called for dinner, the Lodge was still dark and we made our way to a long table with only 2 places set (no greeting by staff or anyone for that matter). We followed several other people (staff? workers? people living in the area?) in line for a buffet that consisted of ground hamburger stew and bagged iceberg lettuce. Our choice of drink was from pitchers of water or lemonade. The Lodge gets rave reviews for their burgers and cold drinks (beer, etc.) that are offered to day users coming off the hiking trails. This would have been a great improvement over the 'family style' dinner provided to us. After dinner we concluded that the service was nowhere near what was advertised and paid for and that the Lodge was surely closed (as the sign clearly stated and the lack of other paying guests indicated) and decided to drive the long, rough road out of there without staying the night. Definitely not worth the $791.78 that was charged for 2 people for 2 nights.
Hi Jeff. I've been expecting this review! Big Sandy Lodge also operates a restaurant open to the public Thurs-Mon. The "closed" sign is to save people from parking and walking in to ask if we are serving burgers. That's why you were greeted at the door so you wouldn't be confused. There actually were other guests booked that night, but had messaged ahead to say they would be arriving late. The bathrooms have complimentary soap and shampoo for people who didn't bring any or forgot theirs, such as the hikers who bought showers just after lunchtime and left their towels hanging. The bathrooms are cleaned every morning and checked at noon or more frequently if staff use them. If there was excrement, which I suspect there wasn't, thanks for cleaning it up? My staff didn't clean up a mess you described, and it wasn't there when I checked after your departure. When called to dinner for the second time after waiting 10min and assuming you had not heard the first bell, I was acknowledged with a flippant hand gesture over your shoulder as you walked the other direction. So I let my staff go ahead of you since you clearly didn't want us to wait for you. The dinner that night was a homemade stew due to the weather being cruddy all day, and I thought a big stew might have been appreciated. There were also sides, and a fresh-made salad of Romaine and Iceberg as well as tomatoes and cucumbers, and a delicious homemade apple crisp. I did notice that you went through the line twice and ate half the apple crisp. That said, beef hamburger stew is not a typical meal here; that's why I asked how your meal was, to which you replied, "Great". Yes, the cabins are rustic, and yes, the lodge can be dim on a cloudy day. That's because we are an off-grid, remote, historic lodge, which is pretty clear on the website. Most importantly, well-adjusted adults typically ask questions or express themselves in a way that allows me to try to provide a better experience. They don't knock on the door at 8:30 pm and yell their complaints past the 4-year-old child who answered the door, then jog to their car to take off before I can even stand up to discuss the issues. This obviously was not the place for you.

The whole crew made it a very enjoyable weekend. The food was fantastic. Even got some fishing in. It was wonderful to get a break from the phones and internet and get more 1 on 1 visting done with the guests, ourselves, and owners Jace and Chrissie. It was a night stay given to us for our anniversary. We'd do it again. The Cabins are comfortable, and the bedding was great too.
